UDAAN
FLIGHT BOOKING SITE
SUMMARY
Udaan is a mobile app that helps booking flights for various groups of customers.
Target audience: Anyone who would like to book a flight ticket.
Motivation: Since the idea of being a wanderlust is viral among millennials, there is a huge potential for a large number of people to visit Udaan. In addition, in India, flight tickets are getting cheaper and air travel is getting easier. The ever-booming IT industry and effect of globalization would create more opportunities for overseas and inbound travel.
Result: It facilitates this by providing an easy to use, clear design.
Role: Research, design and test all UIs related to the project.
USER RESEARCH
HIGHLIGHTS
Users who were interviewed by me were surprisingly shy. The major insights from user interview are:
-
Offers created interest in some of the users
-
One user said he would choose the cheapest flight
-
Users like the site to be less cumbersome
-
They like less clutter since this is a mobile app
-
One user wanted food recommendations in the page where the flight details are displayed
-
Multi-city option was preferred by one user
-
One user wanted the option to edit the flight details after the flight ticket is confirmed
SYNTHESIZING
RESEARCH
INTO
DESIGN STRATEGY
-
As a part of this phase, based on the observations from user research, I built an Affinity Map.
-
built a persona to humanize my target users.
-
developed a storyboard. (Characters inspired from "The Office" series.)
-
Feature Prioritization- Devised features for my design
DESIGN-
PLACEMENT
AND
LAYOUT
I sketched the screenflow for my design using pen and paper.
Then, I created paper prototype and tested it with users recruited for the test.
The following are the design recommendations received after the test.
-
Cookie –based offers could be provided
-
The flights could be displayed cheapest flight first by default
-
Option to select multiple cities from source city
-
Food recommendations could be added to the flight options screen
-
Edit details option to be added in the navigation snippet. I could add a previous orders option and add edit button there

To initiate the creation of information architecture, I performed Card Sorting. I looked out for trends and created the Sitemap.

This provided me a basis to plan out the navigation. In this case, I decided to use global navigation for my site. Since the homepage is like the main landing page where all the bookings would happen, it would be good to have all the links in one place thereby making it easily accessible. There might be no need for a local navigation or faceted navigation as this isn't an ecommerce site with multiple facets.
WIREFRAMING AND
PROTOTYPING
As a part of this phase, I created low-fidelity, medium-fidelity and high fidelity wireframes.
Tools used:
Low-fidelity- Pen and paper
Medium-fidelity- Axure RP
High fidelity- Proto.io
